Read Baker and Gollub, Chaotic Dynamics, chapters 1 through 3. The goal of the lab is to reproduce in experiment and in theory the graphs of chapter 3.

Read Baker and Blackburn, The Pendulum, chapters 2.1, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2.1, 3.2.2,  3.2.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.3.2,  6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4.1. Your goals are to reproduce Figures 6.3, 6.7, 6.8, 6.9. In Figure 6.7 the dimensionless paramenters are Q = 4, A = 1.5, and wD = 2/3. In Gollub’s notation, A = g, Q = q. Thus Gollub Figure 3.7 is the same as Blackburn Figure 6.7.

First steps are to determine the experimental values of the dimensionless parameters Q, A, and wD. See section 6.2 of Blackburn, or read this introduction to the theory.

Follow the calibration procedures in the Daedalon manual, chapter 3. Do experiments 1, 2, 3, 4.

Do the experiments described in section 6 of the Daedalon manual. Reproduce the simulations and experiments.

There are a bunch of Mathematica notebooks on the course webpage to help you extract the angle and velocity data from files and process it to extract the natural frequency and damping parameter. And to take the Fourier transform and to simulate the data too!
